Our Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Spot.

On the surface, Lux may look more like a challenging scholarly examination rather than the latest pop record from a musician whose previous hit featured an international pop star. Split into four distinct parts and performed in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged album investigating female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently through the lens of different saintly figures. The end of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of contributors. The pure audacity alone makes the work of other pop stars appear rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album manages to avoid overly academic posturing feels almost miraculous, with full praise belonging to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its ambitions are far higher here, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that really raises her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of fun. Much like the legendary Björk during her height, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless want to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth clearly on a stunning piano-led song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds in like cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly know—nor wish to predict—what you is going next."

Almost every song ends at a totally distinct point than how it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a song echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused work starts off moody and brooding, with menacing beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves straddling the line between bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable hits. A song sung primarily in English builds around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly nagging melodies as it spirals upward. That feat is echoed by another powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep source of buried gems that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record offers a lavish banquet where the guests at the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
