European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
